The Valley Hispanic Bomberos was established in 1990 by a group of Phoenix Firefighters who worked in the Downtown area.  In an effort to educate the neighboring community, the firefighters hit the streets going door to door talking to residents about fire safety and prevention.  Community outreach programs were developed, such as smoke detector walks, and a successful water safety/drowning prevention campaign that helped Phoenix’s Maryvale neighborhood, which was once dubbed the “Drowning Capital of the World”, see its lowest number of drowning incidents in just two short years.
